El Dorado's seasons
Know what the best season is to visit El Dorado and what to wear.
Winter
(December - February) El Dorado County resides in the Sierra Nevada foothills with elevations ranging from 800 feet above sea level to over 2000, offering a plenrty of opportunity to soak in the view of the snow-capped peaks. Winter is the slowest time of the year where daytime temps range from 30-55 degrees. Wear jeans, a sweater and a warm jacket in case you run across some intermittent weather between your wine tasting stops.
Spring
(March - May) As Spring arrives, so do the temperatures. The stunning green hillsides beg for a hike around one of the many lakes and do bring a picnic and a bottle of wine you pick up along one of your winery stops. Spring is also "release" season where most wineries begin offering their latest vintages with special parties and experiences. Reservations are recommended.
Summer
(June - August) Summer can offer temperatures from 70-90 degrees at times depending on the elevations you plan on visiting. We recommend you drink a lot of water and enjoy yourself as wineries offer many different tour and tasting events to choose from. Reservations are strongly recommended starting mid-June.
Fall
(September - November) Fall is harvest season in Amador County which attracts wine collectors from around the globe seeking to be part of the excitement of “crush”. From legendary harvest parties to production tours, you’ll need to plan ahead. Reservations are strongly recommended.

El Dorado's travel tips
Traveling to El Dorado
- If you are arriving via a commercial airline, your best option is to fly into Sacramento International Airport (SMJ). From there, you will need to rent a car or use a ride share app to get into El Dorado Wine Country.
- Being the El Dorado wine region is vast, there are plenty of different ways to arrive by private plane or charter transportation. If you are flying private, Placerville Airport (PVF), South Lake Tahoe or Cameron Park Airport. There are very few Uber & Lyft drivers, so we recommend hiring a driver for the day.
- Amtrak California offers one daily motor coach round trip to the Transit Center in Placerville on their way between South Lake Tahoe and the Sacramento train station.
About El Dorado
El Dorado County is one of the most diverse, beautiful places you’ll ever visit. Sierra scenery is nothing short of spectacular, spanning across more than 1800 square miles with elevations ranging from just a few feet to more than 10,000 feet above sea level. The 1848 discovery of gold in Coloma touched off the largest gold rush in history.
Today we are much more than rustic mining towns and historic sites. We are a year-round vacation destination overflowing with outdoor adventure, a welcoming wine and agricultural scene, enriching family activities, and a proud Gold Rush history.
